Planned Giving

Common Methods of Planned Giving:

Bequest:  Leave money, property or other assets to California Lions Friends in Sight in your will, without affecting your lifestyle.

Charitable Remainder Trusts:  Place cash, stock, real estate or other assets into an irrevocable trust that pays out annually, a specified sum, to the donor or donors designated beneficiaries for a lifetime or a maximum term of 20 years.  At the time of death or the end of the term, the remaining balance is transferred to California Lions Friends in Sight, without taxes or probate.  There are two main types of charitable remainder trusts:
  • Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust:  Place cash or securities irrevocably in the name of California Lions Friends in Sight and receive a specified amount of money each and every year for the lifetime of one or two specified beneficiaries.  At the time of death, the balance is transferred to California Lions Friends in Sight.
  • Charitable Remainder Unitrust:  Place assets into an irrevocable trust for a predetermined number of years.  During those years California Lions Friends in Sight benefits from the income of those assets.  At the conclusion of the term, the assets revert back to the donor or donors’ heirs.
Current Outright Gifts:  A donation of current stocks, real estate and other personal property can be considered a planned gift.  Stocks, publicly traded or closely held is the most common form of a non-cash gift.  Real estate, is the second most common form of a non-cash gift.

Retirement Plans & IRA’s:  This method requires a beneficiary designation form, from the retirement plan administrator, in which you name California Lions Friends in Sight as the entire or partial beneficiary of the plans assets upon death.

Life Insurance:  A beneficiary form, from your life insurance company which specifies California Lions Friends in Sight as the entire or partial beneficiary of the policy is all that is needed.

In addition to the philanthropic value of taking the time to make a difference, there are many tax benefits to various planned gifts.  Each option needs to be well thought out and with the assistance of your own certified financial planner, tax attorney or certified public accountant.

California Lions Friends in Sight can provide some general knowledge surrounding these mechanisms, but does recommend you seek professional advice before finalizing any decision.

California Lions Friends in Sight requires its board approval, before any gift of real estate may be accepted.
